Habit experiments, n=1,
on purpose.

SpanPost is a field journal on productivity, focus, and the boring mechanics of getting useful things done. Each post documents one self-experiment — hypothesis, method, data, what actually changed.

What I track

Eight beats. Boring on purpose.

The productivity field is mostly hustle and supplement marketing. I track the unsexy variables that actually show up in my own logs — sleep, focus, energy, caffeine, the apps I actually open.

Focus

Deep-work blocks, distraction logs, and the quiet mechanics of getting one thing done before lunch. n=1 experiments only.

/ 01

Sleep tracking

How I log sleep with wearables and apps, what the numbers disagree about, and what stayed consistent across six months of data.

/ 02

Caffeine

A two-year self-experiment on caffeine timing, dose, and the afternoon crash that turned out to be more boring than the internet thinks.

/ 03

Movement

Walking, lifting, and the cardio sessions I actually finish. Not a fitness brand. Just what survived contact with a full inbox.

/ 04

Energy logs

I track perceived energy on a 1–5 scale every two hours. Six months in, the patterns are weirder than I expected.

/ 05

Habit experiments

Each post documents one experiment — hypothesis, method, data, what changed. Mostly the result is "nothing changed," which is also data.

/ 06

Tools & apps

I review the apps and wearables I actually use, against the ones I uninstalled in week two. Bench tests, not marketing copy.

/ 07

Long view

Essays on productivity culture, the limits of self-tracking, and why the most useful systems are usually the ones nobody is selling.

Aerobic fitness

A field estimate I track on my own.

The Cooper 12-minute run is a well-known field estimate of aerobic capacity. I log my own number every few months. Run as far as you can in 12 minutes — then enter the distance below to compare against the standard reference table. Not medical advice; just a number to log.

Cardiorespiratory fitness

Age
Elite≥ 50 ml/kg/mintop 5%
Excellent37 – 43 ml/kg/mintop 20%
Good31 – 37 ml/kg/minabove avg
Fair25 – 31 ml/kg/minaverage
Poor< 31 ml/kg/minbelow avg

A number I log every few months.

VO₂max — your body's maximum oxygen uptake during intense effort — is a measurable aerobic-fitness metric. The Cooper 12-minute run is one of the simplest field estimates available without a lab. I track my own number a few times a year as one data point among many.

This calculator maps a 12-minute run distance to a published reference table for the age you enter. Treat the result as a logging tool, not a diagnosis. Trends in your own data over time are more useful than any single reading.

To use it: run as far as you can in 12 minutes, enter the distance below, and find your age column. The chart shows where the standard table puts that result. Not medical advice — talk to a qualified healthcare professional about anything that matters.

Sleep tracking

A simple sleep-debt log.

I use this to track my own weekly sleep deficit against the eight-hour reference. Drag each bar to what you actually slept and see the week's cumulative gap. It is a logging tool, not a diagnosis — talk to a qualified healthcare professional about anything that matters.

Habit logging

Seven habits. Twenty-eight days.

Not a streak app. A compound log. These are the seven habits I am tracking in my own life this quarter. The streak column is not a reward — it is a diagnostic for when a system is breaking down.

The point of any habit experiment is not the headline result. It is that you now know one more thing about your own data — and you cannot un-know it.
